From Africa to Australia to China - where to next, o'Vice-Captain?
Alene Mukeshimana
Outstanding students evolve from developing good work habits and qualities for success. They work continuously on improving themselves and supporting others, demonstrating commitment, persistence, responsibility, and flexibility, sometimes against all odds – this is the story of Alene Mukeshimana. Alene was born in Mtabila, Tanzania; however grew up in Burundi in a family where basic needs like food was in short supply. Unfortunately, she did not attend school. In 2007, Alene's family migrated to Australia where Alene had the right to education. She started studying the Chinese language in Year 8 despite the difficulty when it came to reading and writing the Chinese characters. Growing in success, over the years, Alene served as an ambassador of Yeronga SHS, representing the school in domestic and international competitions. In the course of her journey as a scholar and student leader, Alene has had a positive influence on students, especially because of her uniqueness; she has risen from being an uneducated young African woman to a fluent speaker of the Chinese language as well as three other languages.
