Principal’s welcome

Welcome to the Yeronga SHS learning community. My name is Terry Heath and I am the very proud Principal of Yeronga SHS. I feel very fortunate and privileged to be the “custodian” of this great school.

Our school is well staffed with a Principal, three Deputy Principals, three Deans, a Head of Inclusive Practices, nine Heads of Department and three Coaches catering for an enrolment of approximately 750 students. Including administration staff, teachers and support staff, there are over 100 full-time and part-time staff who are employed to provide the highest quality of education, as well as educational and administrative support for students. Specialist staff include those catering for Instrumental Music, EALD, Guidance Officer, School Nurse, Youth Support Co-ordinator and Learning Support and Special Needs teachers.

Our school has excellent facilities and is very well resourced. In fact, Yeronga SHS’s resources and facilities are better than many other schools where student numbers are significantly larger. I have worked in a number of large metropolitan schools and have been a “Council of International Schools” visiting team accreditation member. In this capacity I have visited a number of local, interstate and international schools. I believe Yeronga SHS is growing with its reputation and being recognised as a quality school on the world stage.

Yeronga SHS is a “student focussed” medium sized school promoting a very safe and dynamic learning community, only restricted by imagination and effort. Classroom activities have a focus on enjoyment, engagement and success and foster a healthy relationship of mutual respect between students and teachers. Learning must go beyond the classroom into later life with consideration given to the global and future prospects of our students.

Through effective teaching and learning, experienced and committed teachers, flexible timetabling, the assistance of technology and well supported individualised programs, our students can achieve their ambitions.  “Quality Pathways to Success” is our school vision and this drives our efforts. In 2017, 100% of our graduates who applied for Tertiary Studies received a Tertiary Course Offer. We have also received national recognition for our school-wide literacy program and have twice won the Premier’s Multicultural award. Yeronga SHS has also been a State Showcase Award finalist four times and a winner in 2013. In 2017, we had students achieve in the top 2% in Australia for the National English Competition and National Mathematics Competition.

Our school offers school based Traineeships and Apprenticeships, University Pathways, as well as an extended Year 10 - 12 Core Skills Support program that enhances the future pathways for our students. There is a focus on rights and responsibilities carrying equal weight, and guided choices allow students to take responsibility for their learning, which in turn develops maturity and the desire to do well.

We communicate to the community via a quality newsletter three times per term which is available on our website, as well as regular updates on social media through the school’s Facebook page in an attempt to keep the lines of communication open with the community.

I welcome you to the Yeronga SHS community and look forward to working with you in the future as a partner in this important enterprise being your child’s education.

Terry Heath
