Through these pillars, students learn to make informed choices, set goals, and develop the confidence to shape their own success.

By working in partnership with families, we can address challenges early and celebrate achievements along the way. Leadership and Identity DevelopmentLeadership opportunities are embedded throughout Junior School. With guidance from their Learner Agency Teacher, students explore roles that build confidence, resilience, and essential life skills—helping them discover their strengths and develop a strong sense of identity. These experiences strengthen friendships, teamwork, and leadership in a fun, supportive environment. Head of Year 8
Craig Jorgensen Email: cjorg34@eq.edu.au Ph: (07) 3249 1400
Year 8 at Yeronga State High SchoolBelonging, Purpose and IdentityYear 8 is a pivotal year in a student's journey at Yeronga State High School. Building on the foundations established in Year 7, students continue to strengthen their sense of belonging, develop a clearer sense of purpose, and form a confident identity as learners and members of the Yeronga community. Our focus in Year 8 is on setting students up for success in the middle years of secondary schooling and beyond by reinforcing positive routines, productive habits, and self-awareness that underpin academic achievement and wellbeing. Developing Learner Agency and WellbeingA key focus of Year 8 is our Learner Agency program, delivered through lessons with their care class teacher across the year. Through this program, students deepen their understanding of themselves as learners and individuals, strengthen positive relationships, and build the skills needed to navigate adolescence with confidence. Students explore ways to: - Build and maintain healthy, respectful relationships
- Develop their individual strengths, confidence, and resilience
- Engage with relevant issues such as peer pressure, cyberbullying, social etiquette, and empathy for others
- Develop self-regulation strategies and reflect on how they learn best, contributing positively to their community
Academic Growth and Personal Development
Year 8 students are encouraged to strive for academic growth and excellence across their core subjects and electives. Teachers support students to take increasing responsibility for their learning, set meaningful goals, and strengthen effective study habits. Alongside academic learning, we continue to foster personal and social capabilities through our RISE program and the shared expectations outlined in the Yeronga Universals, which promote respectful behaviour, responsibility, and a positive learning culture. Leadership PathwaysYear 8 provides valuable opportunities for students to further develop their leadership skills. Through involvement in the Student Representative Council and other leadership experiences, students build confidence, communication skills, and teamwork as they prepare for junior leadership roles in Year 9. These experiences help students find their voice, work collaboratively, and lead with integrity. Working Together for SuccessYear 8 is a year of growth in confidence, independence, and self-belief. By fostering learner agency, wellbeing, and academic engagement, we aim to support every student in achieving their personal best at Yeronga State High School. I look forward to working in partnership with families to support each student's continued growth and success throughout Year 8. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child's progress, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
